The tango wasn’t chosen on a whim. Co-creator Steve Molaro, a veteran of the “Big Bang Theory” franchise, envisioned the dance as a metaphor for Georgie and Mandy’s relationship.
“There’s undeniable passion at the heart of this relationship,” explains Holland. “But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. There’s struggle, there’s fire, and there’s fighting. The tango seemed like a perfect representation of that dynamic – unexpected, unique, and filled with excitement.”
From Nervous Laughter to Dancing Stars
Osment admits experiencing a mix of fear and excitement when presented with the tango concept. “It’s a bit scary at first,” she laughs. “But then the excitement takes over!” Both she and Jordan received expert choreography from Jonathan and Oksana Platero, renowned talents from “Dancing with the Stars.”
Jordan, who describes his pre-show experience as limited to “a little two-stepping down in Texas,” embraced the challenge. “Dancing the tango definitely wasn’t on my bucket list, but I’m glad I took it on,” he says. “I feel a lot more comfortable moving now after all that practice!”
Beyond the Moves: Setting the Scene
The choreography is only part of the equation. The show’s creators carefully considered the setting for the dance. “We debated whether to film it on a ballroom stage or a dark set,” reveals Holland. Ultimately, they opted for a more intimate setting – the familiar surroundings of Georgie and Mandy’s home.
“There’s something more intriguing about seeing this passionate dance unfold in a domestic setting,” explains Holland. “The contrast between the fiery tango and the everyday environment adds a stylistic flair.” Kudos to the show’s director of photography, Buzz Feitshans IV, for creating a visually stunning scene with smoke, colored lighting, and creative camera angles.
Cowboy Boots or Dance Shoes? The Great Footwear Debate
While the choreography and setting were crucial, a seemingly minor detail sparked the most debate – Jordan’s footwear. “We went back and forth about it,” Jordan remembers. “‘Cowboy boots or dance shoes?’ that was the question.”
“In ‘Young Sheldon,’ I sported Converse most of the time,” he adds. “But I was pushing for cowboy boots… and thankfully, they let me have my way!”
